Info Update #33 friday 6th November 2009
Latest News Featured Article Casting Board Film Competitions Select State

Hi Guys

Well what a week.

I can't tell how frustrating it is dealing with people who "wanna be" actors, but don't have ANY understanding of the process.

We recently listed a casting for a large commercial being filmed in Goulburn. The casting director was looking for local people from the area to work - PAID - as extras on the shoot. Good money, easy pay.

So we listed the notice - detailing that it was a country look they were after - please respond if you are interested.

Well here is what happened:
1. People sent me emails with NO CONTACT PHONE NUMBERS. So frustrating - how can I contact you to confirm an audition time????

2. People sent me almost porno photographs! The brief said "country folk" - I do not want to see any bosoms, heavy makeup, or bare bottoms!!!!!!
(Yes I know country people can be sexy too, but in a commercial, you have a couple of seconds to get the message across and communicate to the viewer, so if the look is country, or heavy metal, or corporate - that is the type of photo I need to see)

3. I got headshots, I resized the photos, presented them to the casting people, I booked the extras in for auditions and then - they just never confirmed back with me? HELLO!!! I know actors out there who would kill for this opportunity - it is PAID WORK - and you did apply for it - what happened there?

4. I had people call me and say, look - keep me in mind for something else - yeah right - like - how many times do you think they will be auditioning for a major commercial in Goulburn!!!!!

Do you get my frustration?

No wonder the casting directors do not publicise audition information - their time would be spent dealing with people who are not serious, have no understanding of how the casting process works and just "wanna-be" famous.

Sorry guys - there are steps you can take.

If you want to know how the industry works - WE DO HAVE INFO that will help you.
Pick up a copy of the EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW -To Become an Actor Ezine from the bookstore, or How To Fast Track Your Career.

This is the first step for people who are SERIOUS!!!

I am still smiling and laughing but also very cranky with the people who have wasted mine and the casting directors time.

AND HERE IS ANOTHER THING:
(Watch out - I am on a role here :)

All of the above is why casting directors do not take SELF SUBMISSIONS from actors or list the casting info to the general public.

If you see roles for major TV shows advertised on other sites, and you as an actor just have to click SUBMIT - I can assure you your chances of getting an audition would be almost zero!!
Casting directors do not have time to sort through the garbage that comes from "wanna-be" actors who don't have agents.
If you have the training and experience for the role, your agent will submit you - and the casting director will look at the submission.

If you are one of the many "wanna-be" actors who are self submitting via an online members sites for shows such as mmmm... Underbelly, I can assure you that the casting director will not be interested. Those notices go out to all the agents - so if you have an agent - and you are right for the job - your agent will submit you. If you are an experienced actor and don't have an agent - DO NOT believe that you have a chance of being on one of these shows by self submitting.

It is just that site listing the info to get your money!

Have a great weekend,

Lee

Acting to Camera & Casting Workshop

TONI HIGGINBOTHAM is a leading casting director in Australia. With over twenty years experience ¡V the last ten owning her own agency ¡V Toni has a reputation for obtaining results by looking beyond the traditional means of casting. Through her time as Casting Director at the ABC, her work on A Country Practice and E Street, as well as the hundreds of TV commercials she has cast, Toni has developed strong relationships with the pool of high-profile Australian actors. She has helped launch the careers of international stars, casting actor CATE BLANCHETT in her first TV role and model MEGAN GALE in her first on-screen performance.

Moreover, Toni understands that finding the perfect cast is not a matter of flicking through a book. She scouts for real people that will give the product the edge it requires.
¡¥When I work with Toni, I know I¡¦m going to end up with a great cast.¡¦
Mat Humphrey, The Guild

Toni collaborates closely with directors and she ensures that her vision is aligned with that of the creative team.

¡¥The casting director is a collaborator. As a director, I don¡¦t want a casting director to bring in a bunch of people in the hope that I will find one who is interesting. That is a waste of my time and the actor¡¦s time. Toni and I discuss the roles in detail and she will bring in four or five really good people for each role. It¡¦s great when you take the results to the agency and nobody can decide who to lose!¡¦
David Gaddie, The Sweetshop

The workshop will maximize your career opportunities by helping you develop the fine art of performing onscreen. It teaches students how best to present themselves on camera when delivering their work to the camera, to directors, and casting agents, thereby making the most of the screen test experience.

The Author
Anna Waters-Massey is a Drama teacher and experienced performer. She has taught Drama for many years, performed in various theatre productions, TV and film, and regularly does voice overs and jingles for studios and production houses. Her "Cool Stuff" Books have been on the bestselling list at Brisbane's "Book Nook" for well over a year.

What the kids say about the workshop
Anna's workshop was really enjoyable and at the same time informative. I received lots of great tips and had a lot of fun. Her books are full of great scripts that I will use in future drama lessons and at eisteddfods. In a small group everyone got to know each other really well and Anna talked to us individually which made it a valuable experience. Thanks Anna!!

Sophie 15yrs
I thought the workshop was fabulous I've been to so many workshops that have been a bit boring and so expensive. Your workshop was great; full of fun and exciting things that I can use towards my acting career thanks so much.

Tiah 11yrs
I thought your course was fantastic and I learnt a lot about being natural when I'm acting instead of always playing it up. It's a shame that your course didn't go for longer than the 2 hours because they went so fast and I would have loved to learn more. I met some great people and I had a lot of fun. I hope that you keep holding these courses, as I would love to attend more and extend my learning of acting.

Kate 13yrs
I enjoyed your workshop so much and I highly recommend other people to take the course. I loved it when we had to play various roles out of your book, and then swap characters. It made me feel more confident about acting. Even though I was the youngest in the group I got a lot out of it.

What teachers say about the books
I have recently purchased a class set of Anna's "Cool Stuff for kids to Perform" (Bks 1 & 2) for my year 8 Drama classes. I have found these books an invaluable resource rich in possibilities to aid the creativity of young Dramatists. The books have supplied me with countless possibilities for both scripted and unscripted dramas, whilst also presenting rich ideas for starting points for improvisation, characterisation and performance skill development. I have also noticed the ease with which my students can use the books because of the physical format they are presented in; small, easy to read and handle. A 'must have' for every middle school Drama teacher.

Amanda Murray-Salter, teacher St Teresa's Catholic College Noosaville. Qld

"Cool Stuff for Kids to Perform" is a great resource for any primary to middle years teacher to have. The impro starters are fantastic fun and have proven to be a great way to end lessons. The scenes and monologues are diverse and give the opportunity to explore characters and alternative ways to investigate some social issues like bullying.

-------------------------------------------------

I am flat out this week submitting our Quiet On Set Talent actors for roles on :

For example, a nerdy Guy, a cynical guy, a Greek or Italian looking male 38-46yrs, a truck driver with a license 30-50yrs, young mates having a fight, young mates hanging together, a beach girl, a guy at a bus stop.

You get the picture - the roles are so diverse and so varied, and so - "REAL PEOPLE".

If you are starting out and have not done a lot of work within the industry and you don't have an agent - you can't be serious about being an actor. You are simply missing out on the PAID work.

If you are not on AT2 and Showcast - you can't be serious about your acting career.

I have had a lot of applications for representation with Quiet ON Set Talent - and I am processing those - it takes a bit of time as I am so busy processing the castings but please - if you have REGISTERED and have not sent me your headshot and cv - please do so ASAP!!

Info Update # 32 Tuesday 27th October 2009
Latest News Featured Article Casting Board Film Competitions Select State

Hi Guys

Well what a wonderful few days we spent with LA casting director Debi Manwiller. For those of you who are new readers, Alan Nusbaum from TVI Studios in the US brought Debi out from LA, where she is casting the hit TV show "24", (starring Kiefer Sutherland) - to do some workshops.

I am sure all those that attended the Q&A sessions and the hands on workshops really enjoyed the sessions.

Did you know that Debi has won 2 Emmy Awards. Wow- She is so highly regarded in the industry - and so those of you who got to workshop with her, and get a little insight to the LA casting process, were very privileged.

I also got to meet up with many of you who are both long term and new Quiet On Set readers. It was great to put the faces to the names and I really enjoyed watching all of you do your "read throughs". We have lots of great talent here in Australia and some of the American accents were really good.

Well done everyone.

If you wish to do major film work either here in Australia or in the US you must be able to do the American accent perfectly. Debi mentioned that if you are playing an international bad guy then a mixed accent is OK, but those roles are few and far between. As an Australian actor, you must be able to do a perfect American Accent.

So how do you do this - there are a couple of ways.
I would always recommend you do a workshop first. There are some technical aspects to doing the accent that require explanation. Then you need to practice a lot. The book Speaking American by Bruce Shapiro has a CD in it that can help you practice. Then you need to do some work with a dialect coach to help you fine tune and to eliminate any mistakes that you have picked up. (Note: The book is available at our online QOS Bookstore).

Then you need to practice "acting' with the accent. The accent needs to be so well known that you can then focus on the acting and character, rather than be distracted by trying to get the accent right.

Learning an accent requires time invested in to getting the process so natural that you don't even know you are doing it. Then it is all about the character - as acting should be.

Famous dialect coach John Higgins is running an American Dialect course starting on 6th November in Sydney. He is highly sought after by many of the major American Studios and feature film projects that come to Aus. His opinion on actors and their ability to do the american accent is also sought after by many major studios. See below for more info - John's information is amazing.
---------------------------------------------

This newsletter is jam packed full of info - make sure you have a good read through. There are some great courses listed.

--------------------------------------------

Have a great week.

LOOKING FOR TALENTED AUSSIE ACTORS WITH A GREAT AMER ICAN ACCENT.
Hi Lee

I have just secured a job with Paramount as an accent and dialect coach during the up coming pilot season.

Prior to my arrival in Hollywood earlier this year (July/Aug), my agent at William Morris circulated my resume and a client list within the industry.

As a result of this client list I received a number of invitations to meet casting directors (Lisa Beach, Pam Dixon and Roger Mussenden), two dinners (Matt Scrobalak from CBS and Robert Sherman from Warner Brothers) and two job interviews with Dreamworks and Industrial Light and Magic.

All of this Hollywood attention on myself is a result of the incredible success that Australian actors are currently enjoying in Hollywood. Most of these actors I have had the good fortune to have coached in the last five years.

They have also asked me to inform them of any other Australian actors of my acquaintance who can do a genuine American accent that are not on my client list.

If you know any Australian actors in Hollywood or Australia with this skill, I would be most appreciative if you could forward their names to me.

Professor John Higgins

John was the Speech Coach, Drama Instructor and a Judge on the reality TV show 'Australian Princess', Series 2 which is being produced by Granada TV and which will be aired on Channel 10 in the later part of 2006.

This will be my last accent course of the year, as I'm off to America to work as an accent and a dialect coach for CBS and Paramount Films during pilot season.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if I can be of any further assistance.

Please book asap as there are limited places and say that you saw the notice on QOS.

Viral TVC Campaign 22 Oct 2009
Lat est News Featured Article Casting Board Film Competitions Select State

< p align=center>

Hi Guys

We are getting a lot of question about the PAID WORK - VIRAL TVC Campaign listed on the members audition board.

Here is a bit more info.
A Viral Marketing Campaign is something that is not an "in your face" in your face sell/advertisement. It is a funny skit or set up that people go "wow - did you see the guy on YouTube - and then the YouTube clip gets a zillion hits and the visual footage gets sent around the world in emails etc. The key for the advertisers is that the "hero" in the clip might be wearing a tshirt or a pair of shoes or sunnies, might be using a certain product, outside a certain store etc, that is clearly branded, maybe a bit edgy, maybe a bit cool (whatever the product wants to be) and then everyone sees that brand inadvertantly and becomes brand aware.

So this campaign that is now casting is looking for people to go out on the street - play a character as per the casting brief, and then interact with the general public as that character.
There will be a camera man filming the interaction and putting the clips together.

eg. You might be "playing" a tourist and ask another "real" tourist to take a video of you. You then might do something "out there" as per the script, and then the real tourist might have a reaction. All this is being filmed by a professional camera man.

Kind of like an Ashton Kutcher "setup".
Loads of fun, loads of improv.
Great opportunity for stuff to put on your show reel.
You could end up on YouTube being seen by millions of people around the world!

And you get paid!

Hope that helps - All shapes, sizes and ages required to play "real" people on the street.

----------------------------------------------------

Just a quick note to say Hi to everyone that I met in Sydney and Melbourne last weekend at the TVI Workshops. I am sure everyone enjoyed the sessions with Emmy Award Winning, LA Casting Director for the Series "24". It was great to get into her world and understand the casting process in more depth.
One of the messages I got was that you can do a great audition, be the best person for the job and still not get the role. There are so many other factors that influence the casting process.

Tonight we have the Gold Coast sessions and I look forward to meeting everyone there.
I am sure you can still get tix for the Q&A session tonight at Bond Uni. It is only $25 with the QOS discount.

Cheers
Lee

What's On

About NAFA Screenplay Workshops:

Since Feb 2006, NAFA has been running monthly script development workshops involving all 3 NAFA subgroups of actors, screenwriters and filmmakers.

This is a service we offer NAFA Members and previous guest speakers.
Many scripts have been subsequently activated for production after their readings.
Note: Given we are a film-based group, so we ONLY read screenplays!

Here's the process we request from writers:
TO BOOK your script for the next NAFA script workshop,
please let me know:
* Title of your script
* Number of pages
* Logline
* Brief synopsis
* Character briefs
* Email: tony@nafa.net.au

Important Notes:
(1) Deadline for script submissions for the next workshop: Thursday 15 Oct 2009

(2) Wheras NAFA Members will always get priority, if Members are unavailable to attend,

this workshop will be opened up to others [ see item # 5].

(3) Screenwriters are requested to bring in enough copies to coincide with the number of characters in their script.

Usually 6 - 8 scripts are required.

(4) If a feature script is being read then that will occupy the whole night.
Otherwise, we usually fit in 3- 4 shorts.

(5) Promotion of the workshop will be as follows:
> NAFA Membership (priority)
> NAFA Choc Tops meetings
> NAFA page on Facebook
> NAFA VIPs
> Talent agents, casting agents
> Acting schools, film schools, media contacts
