Lee's Pick of Courses
John Orcsik from T AFTA has some great courses happening in Sydney Melbourne and Gold Coast..

I did the Ultimate Screentest Course with him late last year and it was terrific.
I hadn't been in front of the camera for a while and it was great to put myself back under the pressure of learning lines and being in front of the camera.

Just watching John teach some of the other students throughout the class was amazing. He is such a great "technical" actor for screen and he gives out such great tips in the moment that makes such a difference.

He is running The Ultimate Screentest courses in QLD and Melbourne.
Don't miss out on the opportunity to work with some of Australias best casting directors and teachers.

The casting directors for Gold Coast are:
ALISON TELFORD who I interviewed last year.
DAVE NEWMAN from Christine King Casting his interview is in the members area and I trained with him a few years back, really amazing.
Casting Directors TOM McSWEENEY and FAITH MARTIN - I adore both of them and have interviewed both.

The casting Directors for Melbourne are:
TOM McSWEENEY, SUSIE McLEAN , ALISON TELFORD and TIM LITTLETON - HELEN SALTER CASTING who has just done the casting for the new RESCUE series.

Folks, these casting directors are not just busy working industry professionals, they are all amazing teachers and are passionate about teaching actors.

Once again - DON'T MISS these Screentest Courses.

All the details are below in courses.

Dear Mark,
I want to thank you again for your time and attention on the weekend. I am particularly grateful that, after I asked you to push me, that you did. I am at the stage with my career that I will not settle for anything less than my best (at the time) and it was extremely
beneficial that you realised that. It was also great to have the opportunity to work with Sam so that I could experience different
directing styles (although, as you said, your styles are quiet similar). The workshop has helped me to develop more confidence in
film acting and your supportive, detailed and constructive approach was just what I needed.
Also, It was lovely to talk to someone who is (still) so passionate about their art and the future of the industry. There are lots of very
jaded people I've met in recent years, I like that you are so proactive.
kind regards Nicole B

Hey Mark
Thank you so much for the weekend. It really was SO much fun and I learnt HEAPS from it!

You asked us to tell you if there was anything we didn't like and I only have one which was having to leave. I just wish it went longer.
When I walked out the door I had tears in my eyes because I'd made so many good friends and you were so much fun to work with. I will
definitely miss you.

Thank you so much and I hope we keep in touch.

The Miracle
In a town which could be your town, something strange has happened. After the rain, the canal breaks its banks, a lot of debris gets shifted and when a holy statue bursts up through the floor of 12 year old Veronica Sheehan's bedroom, no one is more surprised than she is... With the enthusiastic support of best friend Zelda, she sets about using her new found skills to help their ailing community. The young people of the town tell us the story in their own words, showing us their parents, teachers, friends and enemies, as an entire population finds itself hungering unknowingly for something magical to come into their lives. When the story reaches its dramatic conclusion only Ron will have the power to turn things round and change a life for the better, but will she have the courage to do it?

Attempts on Her Life
Attempts to describe her?
Attempts to destroy her?
Or attempts to destroy herself?
Is Anne the object of violence?
Or its terrifying practitioner?

Shocking and hilarious by turn, Martin Crimp's play is a rollercoaster of late 20th-century obsessions. From pornography and ethnic violence, to terrorism and unprotected sex, its strange array of nameless characters attempt to invent the perfect story to encapsulate our time.

Wasn't Tomorrow Wonderful?

Remember Love and Marriage? It used to go together like a Horse and Carriage.
Well, this is the 21st century. Modes of transport (not to mention similes) have changed.
But does true love transcend any obstacles? Even those placed in its path by a desperate playwright? Abso-frikkin'-lutely!

This romantic comedy for today begins with our heroine on the eve of her wedding,
then goes backwards in time to find out how she got there.

Written & Directed by Malcolm Frawley
CAST: Alexandra Afflick, David White, Dillon Broad, Edward Wallace, Ellen Schuthof, Emma Jones, Jarryd Kirwan, Jessica Sullivan, Kim Dickson, Lorraine Young, Madolyn Garnham, Melissa-Jayne Porter, Sarah Calleija, Ysobela Wellsmore

Eyes to the Floor
When girls at the Parramatta Training School rioted in 1961, a more punitive institution was set up in a disused psychiatric hospital in Hay, in remote Western NSW. The Hay Institution for Girls was reported to be "a bold, successful experiment to rehabilitate hard-core delinquents." In reality it was a place of extreme, dehumanising brutality for young girls. For 14 years, Hay was the site of further degradation and psychological torment for the young women it housed. Forced to constantly keep their 'eyes to the floor', these girls were not allowed to speak to each other and were forced to lay and then break up concrete paths, scrub paint from walls and tend the institution's garden.

Alana Valentine ('Parramatta Girls') has written a chilling portrayal about one of Australian history's lesser-known dark chapters. 'Eyes to the Floor' is a moving portrait of hope that survives even in the worst of conditions.

Written by Alana Valentine
Directed by Luke Rogers
CAST: Clare Downes, Colan Leach, Corina Cristea, Courtney Gilbert, James Graham, Jessica Vumbaca, Lily Ji, Nicholas Barkl, Patricia Lofaro, Sophie O'Brien

DATES & TIMES: Mon 27 July at 9pm, Wed 29 July at 7pm & Fri 31 July at 9pm

This Mortal Coil
"For in that sleep of death, what dreams may come when we have shuffled off this mortal coil." (Hamlet Act III Sc I)
Seven characters are catapulted into a mysterious world to confront their destiny. Seemingly waking from a dream, the group of women are challenged by the caretaker of a black room with no doors to complete a task that will change their lives forever. As each character reveals various aspects of her past and tries to uncover her reason for being there, it becomes apparent that there is more to the caretaker and the room than first meets the eye. The women also discover that each of them has a past and view of the world that is vastly different from the other.

The play's themes are both universal and timeless - the treatment of women throughout the ages; fate vs. self-determination; the possibility of life after death; and the evolution of western society.

This Mortal Coil is a fresh and intriguing work, developed through improvisation and performed by an exciting new group of graduates from Sydney Theatre School.
Receiving its world-premiere at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, this sneak preview performance will not only entertain, amuse and delight audiences, but also challenge them to question their views on a range of issues, and to reflect on the meaning and purpose of their own lives.

Written and Directed by Mark Matthews
CAST: Linzi Aland, Kathryn Bluhdorn, Steve Maresca, Pollyanna Nowicki, Sophie O'Brien, Felicity Penman, Kelly Robinson & Michelle Sewell.

DATE & TIME: Sunday 2 August at 7.30pm
This Mortal Coil will also play at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival from August 10-15, 2009

Latest News Featured Article Casting Board Film Competitions Select State

Hi Guys

READER FEEDBACK
Thank you so much Lee you don't know how much you have helped me with all that infomation, cause as you know it is very hard for beginners to start somewhere.

It is amazing, i have been searching internet sites for weeks now and you have been the most hopeful. I hope you realise how special you are. Thank you again.
B
----------------------------------------------------

THIS WEEKS QUESTIONS:
My name is zara and i am 14 years old. I was wondering if there is anything that i can be involved in. I love acting, but i dont want it to cost much. I went to an acting class called
'Brightstars' and it was so annoying and badly run. Can you please explain what i can do?

ANSWER:
Hi Zara
Screenwise have the best screen courses around for Teenage kids. They are excellent and I have trained there many times.
For more stage work, I would suggest you look up ATYP, they also have great courses over the holidays etc for teens.
Cheers
Lee
---------------------------------------------------

Hi Lee,
I read Mark's letter and I am in the same position as he is. I'm only new to the game, even though I'm 46 years young but am really enthusiastic and would love to become an actor or at least an extra. Can you point me in the right direction regarding training and any other suggestions you might have that might help me out.
I have ordered the books and have subscribed to your website and read all the tutorials etc which are great. Hope to hear from you soon.
Jen

ANSWER:
Hi Jen
You are in Wollongong so you will need to travel to Sydney for training and for work.

Re extra work, no training needed really, you just need a good agent and I would recommend PG's Agency and The Extra's Agency. They have the contract for All Saints so do the extras each week for that show as well as others. They have both been around for years and are reliable.

Extra work is a great place to start and a great way to get on set and see if you like it. Watch what happens, experience the waiting around
etc!! (Not always glamourous)

For training, you can't go past Screenwise for fast track training. Also The Actors Centre does more Technical Acting type training, rather than specifically for On Camera work.

Toni Higginbothom does a 1 day on camera course for beginners which is good.
She is a casting director that specializes in TVC's so different training required again.
You would need to do about 4 different courses, then you would need to do
about 6-10 short films to get your experience up and build your CV before an
acting agent will take you on.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
Lee

Info Update # 19 Friday June 19th, 2009
Latest News Featured Article Casting Board Film Competitions Select State

Hi Guys

We have some amazing courses listed this week so I won't go on too much as this newsletter is CHOKING with info!

Here is a brief outline, scroll down through the newsletter for more info.

If you are in Sydney, my picks are:

TAFTA has a great Screentest course working with 4 top Casting Agents. You need to be "actor ready" for this so as you can show what you are made of - in an acting sense.
This is your chance to be seen by the top guys who are casting all the shows.

Denise Roberts at SCREENWISE has an amazing workshop with Home & Away Director - Sam Atwell as well as a Masterclass with fab Director Peter Andrikidis. Once again, if you are ready to step up, this is your chance to be seen and "maybe" get discovered by another fabulous industry professional.

Syd Casting Director - Toni Higginbotham also has a 1 day workshop. Toni is a very busy casting director and will help you turn the corner with your audition process.

If you are a QLD based actor, Casting Director Tom McSweeney has just listed his new Term 3 courses. They are fab as usual and definately some of the best acting courses around. If you are a QLD based actor, you MUST work with Tom at some stage in your career. You do need to book early as his courses/terms book out quickly.

Casting Directors Ben Parkinson - who does the casting for heaps of QLD's TVC's has teamed up again with Casting Director Sue Manger for a seminar day - check that one out. Sue has returned to QLD after being based in SA for many years doing the casting on McLeods Daughters.

Melbourne based actors need to contact John from TAFTA to find out about his next courses.
www.tafta.com.au.

Have a great weekend -this is the time to make the most of these opporunitites to work with these fabulous industry professionals.

There is a time for learning the ropes and doing the training, that is one type of learning and part of the process for actors. Then it is time to strutt your stuff for the industry professionals who can make a difference to your career. Don't jump in too early, make sure you have the ground work done before you do a Masterclass for example. But...... keep at it and do the training.

Cheers

4 WEEK SCREEN ACTING COURSE with Casting Director - Toni Higginbotham
TONI HIGGINBOTHAM is a leading casting director in Australia. With over twenty years experience ¡V the last ten owning her own agency ¡V Toni has a reputation for obtaining results by looking beyond the traditional means of casting.

Through her time as Casting Director at the ABC, her work on A Country Practice and E Street, as well as the hundreds of TV commercials she has cast, Toni has developed strong relationships with the pool of high-profile Australian actors. She has helped launch the careers of international stars, casting actor CATE BLANCHETT in her first TV role and model MEGAN GALE in her first on-screen performance.

Moreover, Toni understands that finding the perfect cast is not a matter of flicking through a book. She scouts for real people that will give the product the edge it requires.
¡¥When I work with Toni, I know I¡¦m going to end up with a great cast.¡¦
Mat Humphrey, The Guild

Toni collaborates closely with directors and she ensures that her vision is aligned with that of the creative team.
¡¥The casting director is a collaborator. As a director, I don¡¦t want a casting director to bring in a bunch of people in the hope that I will find one who is interesting. That is a waste of my time and the actor¡¦s time. Toni and I discuss the roles in detail and she will bring in four or five really good people for each role. It¡¦s great when you take the results to the agency and nobody can decide who to lose!¡¦
David Gaddie, The Sweetshop

Toni is a specialist in TV commercial casting, as well as consulting on drama projects and presenting roles for the major networks. Hunting for talent for the thousands of different roles has resulted in Toni becoming an invaluable resource for directors and producers of the highest calibre.

The workshop will maximize your career opportunities by helping you develop the fine art of performing onscreen. It teaches students how best to present themselves on camera when delivering their work to the camera, to directors, and casting agents, thereby making the most of the screen test experience.

The workshop will be a 4 week workshop.

AN INTENSIVE 2 DAY WORKSHOP - THIS WEEKEND
Many actors underestimate the value and importance of voice and body training.  Acting Essentials gives you the tools you need to be prepared, be inspired, and be easily directed in any acting situation.  The focus of Acting Essentials is on the voice, but as the voice and body cannot be separated, the body must be a part of the training, thus it is essentially voice/body training.  My goal for this workshop is for actors to become more skilled at linking the separate areas of actor training to create a more "whole" and embodied experience using Lessac voice and body training as the foundation.

During the workshop we will be addressing the areas of breath, voice, body and presence, and how they combine and apply to the overall experience of acting, essentially "connecting the dots".  We will be using scenes and short texts to explore these connections, so you will have a system of exploration that you can take away with you and utilise when you need it most

Aimee Blesing has spent the past two American summers participating in Intensive training with Master Teachers of Lessac Kinesensic Training, a holistic voice and body method developed over 75 years of research and performance.  Aimee is a Practitioner of the Lessac work and a graduate of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts acting course (2001-03).  She has spent over 10 years training in performance, voice and movement and is passionate about making innovative and world class performing arts training available to Australian performers.

"She has exceptional skills as an actor and... has become one of our leading Practitioners of this work, genuinely gifted as an instructor....I highly recommend her." - Nancy Krebs, Master Teacher, Lessac Kinesensic Training, Maryland USA THIS IS REAL ACTOR TRAINING, NO GIMMICKS, NO SHORTCUTS.

T a f t a P r o d u c t i o n s - Acting for the Screen, With Home & Away Director -SAM ATWELL
Sam Atwell, an actor, playwright and theatre director is also one of Australia's exciting young television directors, currently a resident Director on Channel 7's hugely successful, Home & Away.

"With any part you play, there is a certain amount of yourself in it. There has to be, otherwise it's just not acting. It's lying" - Johnny Depp

I have a firm belief that the basic technique of acting does not change from stage or screen but it is important to understand that the screen demands skills unique to itself as does the "space" on stage demands its own skills. So therefore, whilst the basic techniques of acting don't change, we must as actors adapt to the performance space. The screen is a unique performance space because it is only here that the camera lets us, the audience, get "UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL" with the actor.

This means we, as the audience, can really tell if you're not telling the truth! In order to be able to 'tell the truth' you must feel comfortable and confident with all aspects of acting on screen.

In this twelve week course you will learn and experience the nuts and bolts of screen acting like the equipment, personnel, etiquette, procedure and industry. Most importantly armed with this knowledge you will then learn the tools to act organically in front of the camera.

Through out the course you will develop as an organic actor, become equipped with a toolbox of techniques you can use in every job/audition and learn the ins and outs of working 'on set'.
Each participant will also receive all the footage recorded in class so you can monitor their process.

COURSE LENGTH: 12 Weeks @ 3hrs per nightly session

Info Update # 18 Wednesday 10 JUne 2009
Latest News Featured Article Casting Board Film Competitions Select State

Hi Guys

I had a great enquiry today that I wanted to share with you.
This is typical of the type of enqiries we get constantly and the advice we offer.

QUESTION:
Hi Lee
My name is Mark, I am from Sydney and I am 25years old. I am a former Professional Tennis Player and now currently a Special Forces Soldier in the Australian Army and I am almost at the end of my term of service.

I am extremely devoted to pursuing a career as an actor and I am exceedingly confident in my ability to thrive in the industry. While I have little experience, I believe my background makes me a marketing dream and I do have many valuable and unique talents to enhance my appeal and support me in my pursuit.

I was advised by a colleague to seek your advice and guidance as you were described as a leader in the industry, so as a relatively unexperienced newcomer to the business, is there any information and/or advice you could pass on to me to realize my goals and potential???

I desperately want work in either film or television so any guidance you could offer would be wonderful.
Mark

ANSWER:

Hi Mark
Thanks for your enquiry.

Whilst you have a very interesting career history, it can only be related to acting if you tie those skills you have, in with acting skill and on camera technique.
Acting is one of those strange industries whereby you can actually NOT poses a brain and still make it - Look at Jessica Simpson!! lol.
Just because you can ride a horse, does not mean you would have been a shoe in for McLeods Daughters. In fact, they chose actors first and if needed, use doubles for the horse riding scenes. The acting is the essential part.

Seriously though, those that do make it in the industry work very very hard and do poses talent that they continually fine tune. Acting is a unique skill or talent, just like any other and requires training, experience and then constant work to keep you skills honed. (You would
understand that from the army and from being a tennis player).

There are a few things you need to know to get started as well as some actors tools that are mandatory. Just like a tennis player needs a racquet to play a game, actors also have tools that are expected within the industry.

I would suggest you get a copy of Everything you need to know for Beginner Actors form our bookstore.

It is an online e-zine with all the info that will give you a good understanding of the next steps you can take.

Once you have read that, I would recommend a copy of the DVD we sell, it has tips and stories from industry experts - faces that you will know and currently working industry professionals such as casting directors.
It is important to know what they recommend.

Then you need to do some training and I can recommend a few good places there.

Cheers
Lee Donehue

ps: the Actors E-zine is only $14.95 so very little to get you on the right track.

Cheers
Lee

Info Update # 17 Wednesday, 28th May, 2009
Latest News Featured Article Casting Board Film Competitions Select State

Hi Guys

Hope you have been having a good week.
I went to a course yesterday and I can't tell you how great it was to get with other people and get motivated.
The trouble is you come home and go flat again.

This is a problem for actors, as you are often working alone on your acting career, whilst maintaining a job to support it. It is so easy to get distracted with life. My friend is a fabulous artist and with the recession, she has had to go back to office work as the buyers have dried up. I am desperately sad for her as I can see her getting distracted by life ( and the need to make a living) and I know that it is difficult to give up a full time job and go back to living on the breadline, once you have had the money.
It is just that I can see her losing touch with her art and the potential she has.

Acting is very much like that - you have to keep at it and it is a long long road. Often there are times when nothing much is happening and it is easy to get distracted.
There ARE some things you can do however to keep in the game:

You can do some courses, get an actors group together and perform for each other. You can read the Interviews in the members area and you can watch the QOS - How to Act DVD.

I was going over some of the interviews in the members area myself today and I came across one of my favourites with Casting Director - Tom McSweeney.
He says:

Training - to me what you have chosen to do lives is to be a professional auditioner. That is what an actor is. Your job is to go in to small rooms, with small amounts of time, and do small pieces in front of small groups of people. It has nothing to do with money, it has nothing to do with fame, and an audition is an opportunity to perform. And aren't you pursuing this because you love to act. Why then given the opportunity to do the thing that makes you happy do you screw it up? You get nervous. You wouldn't be brought in unless we wanted you to get the job, unless there was something about you that we thought was right that my producer might respond to. You should go into that room for your 3-5 minutes and bring the joy of performing to the room. You are getting to do what makes you happy. What is there to be nervous about? If you are thinking about the job, or the money or the fame or the tape it is over. Desperation has a scent. Everybody in this business i s as terrified as every body else. We are all terrified there will never be another job and the weird thing about this business is that nobody wants to be seen with anybody in need, so they are not perceived to be in need. So if people come in to the room, needing the job, wanting the job, having to have the job to pay the rent, that is all we are going to see, it is going to be in your eyes. Film is a visual medium....etc

(The full interview with all his tips and advice is in the members area under Tutorials!)

He has such amazing advice and is so spot on.
Tom also features in the QOS How To Act DVD. If you have a copy, watch it again, you will get so motivated. If you don't have a copy, get one from the QOS bookstore.

Gold Coasters are now fortunate as Tom has set up a training school at Warner Bros Studios.

Don't lose touch, don't get distracted. You really need to be with others to keep motivated and make some commitments to your acting career.

Have a great week and stay/get motivated.

Cheers
Lee

The Eric Morris System
Having published over 5 books in his theory, Eric claims that his method is derived partly from Lee Strasberg's Method Acting. However, Strasberg's Method focuses too much on craft, according to Eric, and not enough on the actor's instrument. Facing struggle in finding truth, Eric contemplated his theory while heading the Directors Unit at the Actor's Studio in Los Angeles. Eric's method recognizes the fact that actors have emotional blocks, tension, insecurities and other preventions of achieving a fundamental state of being, thus rendering the actor truly organic. In this sense, Eric stresses that acting is essentially living and being. There are 7 major obligations to material, according to Eric: 1) Time and Place, 2) Relationship, 3) Emotional Obligation, 4) Character Obligation, 5) Historic Obligation, 6) Thematic Obligation, 7) Directorial Obligation. After recognizing these 7 obligations, there are the choices the actor utilizes to render these emotions, and finally th e approach to which the actors use these choices.

The Eric Morris System has received praise from such actors as Jack Nicholson and Johnny Depp.

'I found this course to be the best introduction to Morris technique I have experienced. Within a very short amount of time all of the core elements of this quite complicated method were explained and explored in understandable terms. Morris technique can be very confronting but this course was conducted within a very safe and nurturing environment which allowed the actors the creative and personal freedom to extend their skills and find new depths within the craft. I would highly recommend this course to anyone interested in finding out about Morris Technique, or for people who like to maintain their skills in the method. You will always find something new.' Sydney Shakespeare Festival winter showcase: The Merchant of Venice
Warm up this winter with Sydney Shakespeare Festival's winter showcase: The Merchant of Venice. Bonds of family, friendship, religion and money are put to the test when a bride is won with an enemy's money and the debt must be repaid. Shakespeare's unsettling comedy kicks off at Newtown Theatre, centrally located in the heart of Sydney's inner west, on May 26 for three weeks only.
Performances are at 8pm Tuesday to Friday and 2pm and 8pm Saturdays until June 13.

For all the details visit: www.sydneyshakespearefestival.com.au

Wealthy heiress Portia sets her suitors a challenge. The winner takes her hand and her money, while the losers sacrifice everything. In Venice, city of consumption, speculation and debt, Bassanio borrows money from Antonio to finance his attempt at the challenge. Antonio, in turn, takes out a loan from moneylender Shylock and if he cannot repay the debt, Shylock will take his bond: a pound of Antonio's flesh. In some of Shakespeare's most electrifying scenes, competing claims of tolerance, prejudice, justice and mercy are played out. In the character of Shylock, Shakespeare created one of the most unforgettable outsiders in all theatre.

Directed by artistic director and co-founder Julie Baz, The Merchant of Venice features Sydney Shakespeare Festival regulars Richard Hilliar, David Jeffrey, Roger Adam Smith, Milly Stilinovic and Nicole Wineberg, along with newcomers Walter Davis-Hart, Amanda Laing and Jacob Thomas.

Sydney Shakespeare Festival is "a precious addition to the scant presence of Shakespeare in Sydney" (Australian Stage). In its second year, and venturing indoors for the first time, the festival is fast becoming a permanent fixture on Sydney's social calendar. "Shakespeare's plays have captured the imagination of millions of people throughout the world for over 400 years and are as exciting and provocative now as the day they were written," said Baz.
